DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Pierre Savard ()\nAbstract:  In July of 2012\, the
ATLAS and CMS Experiments announced a major scientific breakthrough: the d
iscovery of a new particle consistent with the Higgs boson predicted by th
e Standard Model of particle physics.  In the last 8 years\, a lot of pro
gress has been made in understanding the properties of this special partic
le.  In this seminar\, I will give an introduction to the Higgs boson and
its role in the Standard Model of particle physics\, describe the acceler
ator and experiments that study this particle\, review what we have learne
d in the last 8 years\, and finally describe what are the next steps in un
derstanding the properties of this particle.\n\nhttps://nyx.physics.mcgill

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Aleksey Sher (TRIUMF)\nhttps://mcgill.zoom.us/j/5315
 899956?pwd=aTJoSmczUm1MTHhTYVFzMXYyUWVlQT09 \n\nThe GEANT4 lecture will to
uch upon the following aspects:\n\n• Why use Geant4\n• How does Geant4
work\n• How to create your own Geant4 simulation\n• How to change thi
 ngs in the simulation (Geometry\, materials\, Physics\, SteppingAction\, o
utput\, PrimaryEventGenerator)\n• Do we trust the output?\n• Where to
get Help?\n• Concluding remarks/discussion\n\nParts of the lecture would
be actually digging into the code\, recompiling\, re-running\, and i will
be doing it using a virtual machine.\nSo those of you who want to follow
along (it can be both fun and educational)\, or have a chance to work on s
ome of the things discussed after the lecture\nit's best to have a similar
enironment on your machine.\nDue to variability in our native operating s
ystems\, versions of software and all that below is the information on ho
w to install a Virtual Machine (an emulation that will run on your system
(win/linux/mac)). It's the most painless way to create a uniform environme
nt for all the participants.\n\n * It is optional of course\, but it is r
ecommended to install this Virtual Machine and test it ahead of the lectur
 e.\n\n------- HOW To INSTALL A Centos7 Virtual Machine---------------\n---
 ---- with Geant\, Root and a bunch of stuff------------------------\nSyste
m requirements for this:\n\n• Windows or Linux users : desktop or laptop
PC running Windows or Linux with a virtualization software installed. Sof
tware is free.\n• Mac users : desktop or laptop Mac running Mac OS with
a virtualization software installed (can be installed with a trial period)
.\n• at least 4 Gb of RAM for the PC or Mac\n• 20 Gb of free disk spac
e available\n\nDownload the VM files:\n\nThe VirtualMachine itself can be
downloaded here in either English or French (i tested only the english ver
 sion).\nIt's a 4.5GB file!\n\nftp://ftp.cenbg.in2p3.fr/info/Vmware/Old-Ver
sions/geant4.10.05/VmWare/\n\nGet the required Virtual Machine software:\n
 \n - VmWare Workstation Player for Windows/Linux (>=version 12.5.9)\, Vmw
are Fusion for MacOS (http://www.vmware.com)\n\n** Installation\n---------
------\n\n - Install Vmware Player (VmWare Fusion for mac) if needed | Ma
 c software has a trial period\n - Decompress the (G4.10.5_CentOS7_us.7z)
file you downloaded from a link above into a directory\n - At the end y
ou can then delete the zipped (.7z) file\n\n** How to use the virtual mach
 ine ?\n-----------------------------------\n\n- Execute Vmware Workstation
Player (Fusion on mac) to open the virtual machine\nFrom VmWare Player\,
open the .vmx file\,\n\nWhen you power on the virtual machine\, VMware Pla
yer displays a message asking whether you have moved or copied the virtual
machine. You have to answer "I copied it". This will create a new uuid an
d a new mac address for the virtual machine necessary for network connecti
on.\nIf VmWare Player ask to install or upgrade Vmware Tools\, you have to
do it because it is necessary for the use of shared folders between host
and guest system.\n\nOnce your virtual machine is powered on\, you have a
real CentOS 7 system\n- A default user account exists\, the login account
is:\nlocal1 and the password is local1\nroot password is centos7\n\n** Tes
ting that you can run Geant4 examples:\n----------------------------------
-----\n\nFor example with the B1 example\, do the following after you powe
 red your machine\n\nmkdir $HOME/buildB1\ncd $HOME/buildB1\ncmake -DGeant4_
 DIR=$G4COMP $G4EXAMPLES/basic/B1\nmake\n./exampleB1\n\nhttps://nyx.physics
